With the importance of reading in the curriculum, and in life, it is essential that students not only master reading skills, but also develop a deeper understanding of key reading concepts. This course provides ways to address these concepts and meet curriculum standards through a variety of engaging, student-centered activities. Building upon the instruction already being done in the classroom, these activities employ current technology trends that relate to the world the students now live in, bringing reading “alive” to them. This course will: a) suggest and describe various activities that can be used to develop key reading skills; b) explain how to design and organize the activities to fit into the curriculum; and c) explain the value of using these activities for learning.
Number of Units: 2.0 graduate level extension credit(s) in semester hours
Who Should Attend: This course provides continuing education for new and veteran teachers at the elementary, middle and high school levels that want to create new activities that enhance student reading skills.
Course Materials: No textbook required. Participants will need access to the Internet and several common computer programs for completion of projects. Projects may also be completed through a Google account, using Docs, Slides, etc.
